Tal-Handaq Nostalgia

Memories of the Royal Naval School, Malta, 1947 - 1978.

Winch for boom defence
A tad rusty, but it has had 70 years exposed to the salt (although the doors were locked in our time). But Prefect took his wire brush this year and polished it all up.

I'd still be there if I had tried! To quote a rude rhyme -"The whole damn thing was driven by steam ... arum (...) bum ..." (The software censored me!)

And round and round went that b....y great wheel.........

Yes, up and up went the level of steam, down and down went the level of............................ Looks so much smaller than I remember it, all things relative I guess. Wonder where the boiler house was? typical engineers question I know.
Prefect   [Jun 30, 2011 at 02:16 AM]
Trust an Engineer to know the words! No sign of a boiler though I wondered if that on the wall might be a feed tank?
phillrose   [Jun 30, 2011 at 02:53 AM]
Unlikely, feed tank would be closer to boiler, would there have been room in the area for a scotch boiler(engineering term, nothing to do with the drink) the stock of fuel, which would surely have been coal at that time, and of course a chimney would help.

Don't get too steamed up about it - it was diesel. Sorry to disappoint - pic follows. I think that's the exhaust lying exhausted across the winch, fuel tank on wall?
Prefect   [Jun 30, 2011 at 05:32 AM]
That figures. Anyone know a song about about Diesels?
