What a mess 'our' street was in during the blitz! This must have been taken from a rooftop in South Street so bottom right-hand corner must be the wall of St Andrew's Church of Scotland, then the church hall where the Youth Club was held then the end of the block was replaced but a new building housing the manse flats on the corner of Britannia Street. A big new block of flats was built opposite. The church tower (centre, top) was replaced just after our time by an enormous dome (perhaps to compete with the tall spire of the Anglican cathedral!) That's my reading of this photo - unless you know better?!

I wouldn't dare! Yes that dome on the Carmelite church was specifically built to dominate St Paul's spire. They boasted about it which did nothing to encourage ecumenical feelings. Crying or Very sad

Well no it wouldn't, would it!! I just presumed that was the reason when I saw it in 1992 but didn't know they'd actually boasted about it!! When we were Scottish country dancing on the roof of the manse flats a crowd of young priests(?) used to come out to watch (but I remember them being closer than that roof so I'm not sure where they came from!)
