At Suez she landed the transport for 45 Cdo. In 1964 she was converted into a dedicated helicopter training ship. In 1967, she was replaced in this role by the purpose built [url=http://www.rfanostalgia.org/gallery3/index.php/RFA-Aviation/Engadine] RFA Engadine.[/url]

My father served on the Lofoten from 25th August 1956 to 26th Feb 1957. I believe he was involved during the Suez crisis. I have his naval GSM (Near East), here at home.

During the Suez crisis she was used to land the transport for 45 Commando which was part of the first ever, operational helicopter assault.
