Tigne Point then and now109 viewsIn days of old when knights were bold,
Developers not invented;
The view serene, tower blocks unseen
And everyone contented.

Floriana Methodist Sunday School and RN bus, 1960118 viewsAbout six RN buses picked up from all over the island to take willing (and less willing) worshippers to Sunday School and Church every week. Parents could travel on the bus but quite a few vicariously preferred to pack the blessed lambs off by themselves. The Padre was an RN chaplain so was presumably able to persuade the transport garage to think of higher things.

Cunard Hovercraft in Grand Harbour, 1967122 viewsBetween 24 February 1967 and 10 May 1967, Cunard's RMS Sylvania carried British Hovercraft Corporation's SRN-6 type hovercraft 024 on board during her cruises in the Mediterranean from Gibraltar. The BHC was trying to interest the governments of various countries bordering the Mediterranean in purchasing hovercraft, and to give government officials a practical demonstration of the hovercraft's capabilities. It was put into the water, using the ship's gear, at various ports and sent on demonstration runs. The hovercraft was not there to provide sight-seeing trips for cruise passengers, although occasional short trips for passengers were made 'around the bay' between the official runs. The venture proved unsuccessful and was not repeated.

Banyan Style525 views"The sand was so beautiful on Ramla beach that it was golden shading into red. There was no habitation there. You walked down a farm track through groves of bamboo to the beach. On the beach there is a statue of the Madonna on a pedestal. It carried a light or lantern on the top. There were few if any visitors. On some days the only person to visit the beach was the lamplighter who faithfully lit the Madonna’s light. As the evening light faded bats would swoop low over our campground. The trip was a success except that our pet tortoise, whom we had taken with us, marched off into the bamboo groves and may even be living there now after an interval of sixty-something years."

Recognise anyone? Verdala 1954/5268 viewsAnne Richards writes "My mother, Mrs Margaret Cooke, was a teacher at Tal-Handaq in 1954 and transferred to Verdala in 1954/5. She must have left after my brother was born in August 1955. This photo was found amongst her papers and I believe it may be Verdala and would very much like to know whether anyone recognises themselves in the picture - probably 1954-5? My Mother is the teacher in the photo and the artwork on the walls is her work. Thank you."adminNov 02, 2021
