The old boat house, nicely designed to blend in with the surrounding buildings. The sign to the right looks like the no anchoring warning, due to the high voltage electric cables in the area.

Aaah. Must have been designed for boats with fixed masts! The cables go to Manoel Island.

We used to keep our 'canoes' in here in the mid sixties (kayaks really). We painted shark's teeth and eyes on the front of the craft.....

Regarding the masts prefect, remember this was Army!! As for the cables it is possible the feed was from the Dockyard as there was the same sign in Grand Harbour, and when one of dads mooring vessels took that one out he reckons it blacked out many of the service flats over Sliema side, he said he was not popular!!

Thats what I suspected! The chart shows no direct connections from the Dockyard but they could have come via Valletta & the cable that reaches Tigne at the cave. There is also a water pipeline to/from Valletta.

There is still the black Cable sign at Hay Wharf so that must have been one route - maybe still is? I can post a pic but its a long way off.

The chart shows an area of "Disused Cables" between Hay Wharf and Manoel island.

Suppose you wouldn't want to foul them, live or not. (You'd have to send Phill out - he was wanting a job there! Moorhen still going?)

There is a new one.

Looking at a chart from 61 in the Bonnici/Cassar book, I can count in the region of 11 cables running from Senglea & St.Angelo forming a Vand coming ashore in the region of Custom's House. The words"Prohibited Anchorage" are in the V formed. Several then look to run to Manoel, and one runs across to Tigne. The lines on the chart do appear to be different, I guess to signify their purpose, but the print is not very clear, and anyway we would need someone with a knowledge in maritime matters and chart thingys to tell us what they signify.
Prefect   [Aug 03, 2011 at 02:10 PM]
Well I am supposed to be such but fortunately someone has put them online here, not that they help much with the Bonnici chart which pre-dates them. Two of the cables to Manoel are labelled 'power'.
