Those planks look a bit hard to sleep on! Any idea where this tunnel was?

No, the source didn't say. Could be the old Valletta railway station?

Strange this, I found the identical picture a few days ago, in a set of fairley modern WW2 magazines, post decimal anyway. There were no further details in the article, but believe the magazine was from the IWM.

This copy was attributed to the US Library of Congress.

Just had a delve in the recycle bin, my copy taken from "Images of War" by Marshall Cavendish in association with the IWM. Title, "The interior of a civilian shelter on Malta, blasted out of the rock to provide shelter from the Axis raids", not much help as far as location I'm affraid.

Thanks Phill. But do you think it looks a bit too well finished and weathered to have been blasted out specially for a shelter? More likely the old station I'd say (for what it's worth!)

Someone whose father was in the Lancashire Fusiliers agrees with our theory! Click here & scroll down. And so does this site.

Have no doubt you are correct Liz, I just gave the title as it was given in the article, "blasted out" does sound more dramatic than hewn out by hand. Reckon the railway tunnel theory is more or less confirmed by the other two sites.
