Must have been this one - 1 April 1942: HMS P36 was lying alongside a jetty at Sliema Harbour in Malta when the Luftwaffe attacked the harbour. A large bomb landed sufficiently near to the submarine to hole her and she began to sink. Despite desperate efforts to save the submarine she rolled over and sank.[2] She was raised on 7 August 1958 and scuttled off Malta on 22 August 1958.

Thanks, admin, yes, sounds like the right one! I'll let Barbara know. Didn't wartime subs have names?

Most did but I think some of the smaller ones had to make do with numbers.... There's more - U Class Submarines, Group 3 - These formed the largest group of 'U' class submarines, comprising 34 vessels ordered in three batches. Losses continued to be high. In June 1940 the decision was taken, in view of the anticipated high number of submarines to be ordered, to drop the practice of naming submarines, so these vessels were initially labelled P.31 to P.39, P.41 to P.49, etc, instead of receiving names. At the end of 1942 Churchill personally ordered that all submarines were to receive names, but eight ships were lost whilst in service with the Royal Navy, before they could have their names officially assigned. In addition, a number were assigned to allied navies, both before and after the war. One assigned to the Norwegian navy, HNoMS Uredd, was also lost after hitting a mine. The last surviving U-class boats were scrapped in the 1950s.

Whoops, I'm giving you a lot of research aren't I - or did you know all that?! Thanks anyway!

I cannot tell a lie Miss, I would be lost without Google and Wikipedia.
