Tal-Ħandaq Nostalgia

Memories of the Royal Naval School, Malta, 1947 - 1978.

David Michael Gerrard 1946-2016 (aka Prefect)

My very very sad task to report David's passing on Sunday 17 January. THN Webmaster, Scholar, Sea Captain, Falklands Veteran, Friend and all round Good Bloke, he has gone to stand at the back of the big Assembly in the sky (or is it Detention?). Sahha xbien.

Dave seen here in his role as honorary member of TH ladies-who-lunch (Exeter) club, Sept 2015.

Funeral to take place at 3pm Tuesday 2nd Feb, Weston Mill Crematorium, Plymouth PL2 2EP (easy access from A38).

Please feel free to write tributes below, they can be printed out for the day.

So sad to hear of David's passing, the steady hand on the tiller of the TH & RFA sites, the collection of such a great variety of images from our time on the island, he will be missed.
With deepest sympathy to his family, from one old seafarer to another.
When Britain ruled the waves and when Britain waived the rules.

(Liz Mardel ex Miss McMeeking, Verdala) Sadly used to seeing the staffrooms emptying, but not the playgrounds. David did an amazing job with this site, bringing back many memories for both ex-pupils and ex-staff, at first for TalH. and later adding Verdala and the other service schools. He could answer any question I asked him and wasn't afraid to fight battles for those of us who posted pictures then found them appropriated by other sites!
My thoughts are with his family and friends. Bon voyage David.

So sorry to hear the news. He created a great site for everyone who loved Tal Handaq and recreated some wonderful memories. My thoughts go to family and friends at this sad time.

A dedicated gentleman whose superb work building and maintaining the Tal-Handaq site holds memory's door open for so many of us. Sincere condolences to his family and friends for their loss. (Peter Doherty- old Verdalan)

Sadly David is the second Tal Handaq Colossus we have lost in the last few weeks. I would like to thank him for his record keeping, his humour and his ever presence on the Net keeping Tal Handaq and our beautiful home of Malta at the forefront of everyone's mind.

Sad news. I have spent hours on this site looking though the photos and reading the comments. I never met David, I only knew him through THN, but when my posts required a comment or an answer he always responded promptly and with good humour. I am very grateful to him for making all this available. RNSTH January 1965 – July 1966.
