I remember my journey on this ship with fondness. We were coming home to the UK from Malta leaving Grand Harbour on 30th June 1960. One of our Maltese friends had rowed across Grand Harbour from Vittoriosa and tried to present a parrot in a cage to my Mum (through the porthole) as a farewell gift. The locals in Vittoriosa also lit a bonfire as a final salute to my Mum. She was a very popular lady in the Vittoriosa community in the late 50's and was very unhappy about leaving Malta.
Reply - After a certain amount of persuasion our Maltese friend left with it in the bow of his boat. To grace a sailor's shoulder no doubt!

Most of us were unhappy to leave. What happened to the parrot?
