This represents a soul in Purgatory (see Wikipedia). These statues were very common in Malta, and quite a few remain elsewhere. They were erected as a reminder of those departed and to pray for them.

Thanks Pullu. That fits with the inscription "O SINJUR GESU TAJJEB, GHATIOM IL MISTRIEH TA DEJJEM. RIP". Though I can't figure out Ghatiom?

Aghtihom (wrongly spelt ghatiom) is the Maltese for 'give' . Thus the inscription reads ' Oh good Lord Jesus, give them eternal rest RIP'
