  • A CRUSADER

I am a Crusader of old,

Who fought the Turks so brave and bold.

With a swipe to my left,

And a swipe to my right,

I fought the Turks all day and all night.

Richard the Lionheart, My leader was he, We fought side by side, To Victory.

Richard fighting in the Holy Land,

Crusaders gathered to lend him a hand,

Now I grow old and tire of the fight,

But know that I have done which is right,

To have fought next to that bold, brave knight.

SCHOOL FIRST XI SOCCER — 1960

White won the Soccer Shield convincingly gaining 28 points from a possible 36, our nearest rivals Drake and Stephenson being 13 points behind us. The senior team, containing five school regulars, achieved a remarkable feat by winning all six of their matches. Although success was due to teamwork several players were outstanding, Satterley always seemed to produce his best form for White, and Fraser scored eight times. Hannant, our new goalkeeper, was always safe rather than spectacular. Two of last season's 2nd and 3rd year team, Peacock and Turner, played very well in their first season of senior football, the latter was, in fact, a regular in the school 1st XI. The 2nd and 3rd year team won their first three matches and despite fading in the latter half of the season they won their section by three points. Parker, the captain, was the leading goalscorer, with ten goals but this team's defence can be proud of their record of conceding only two goals. The first year tournament was closely, fought, our team just scraping home by one point. Patterson scored eleven of his side's 13 goals, five of these being in one match, Tucker wais a competent captain.

This was an excellent all round house success and any boy who played in the teams can be justly proud.

    MIKE HAY — (Capt.)

    RUGBY REPORT 1960-1961

The school played two matches against the Overseas Rugby Club and put up an excellent showing considering the lack of practice plus the fact that a few of the lads had never played before. In the first game the school won by 5 points to 3 points, but the Overseas gained their revenge by winning the second game by 9-3.

In both games the school XV was aided by the experience of a few teachers and the outstanding player was undoubtedly J. Melton who saved the day lime and again with daring tackles.

I think that with a reasonable amount of practice the school could field a strong XV but time will tell. I extend the team's gratitude to Mr. Griffiths and Mr. Morris who have been extremely helpful in arranging the games and in playing for us. With a bit of effort on everyone's part, next season could reap new records.

    SWIMMING SPORTS-1960

  • GIRLS' LiFESAVING SUMMER 1960.

As soon as Ricasoli opened hordes of girls crammed the 8.30 and 9.30 a.m. launches on Saturday mornings to practice swimming for their life-saving awards,

Miss Herbert, Miss Bower, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Renyard with the help of the P.T.I.s of Ricasoli, St. Angelo and Corradino, were responsible for 74 successful candidates.

These successes, plus those of the boys and of Verdala Juniors, enabled us to win, once again, the Statuette of Liberty Award. The trophy was presented to Marianne Tottman on behalf of the school at the Palace, Valletta, by His Excellency The Governor. This was for the highest number of life-saving awards won by schools and colleges in Malta.

The girls passed their examinations by attending weekly swimming classes, and, in some cases, daily land-drill and theory practices regularly. For this we must thank their Instructors who chased them, threatened them and worked them unceasingly to achieve such splendid results.

The School First Eleven this season was coached by Mr. C. Pollard and Lt. R. Baker. The team consisted of B. Breslin, R. Casey, S. Ellis, (V. Capt.) J. Merriman, W. Willman (Capt.) R. Melton. G. Robinson, M. Hay, R. Saterley, D. Northover, and A. Hutton. Colours for outstanding bowling were awarded to G. Robinson and J. Merriman and for batting colours were awarded to B. Breslin, R. The first matches were against, a Parents Eleven, a Staff Eleven, Halfar and St. Edwards College, in all these matches the school were very successful. Later matches were played against R.A.F. TaKali, R.A.F. Luqa, H.M.S. Ausonia and the Dockyard Officers team, the school played well in them but without success.

As this years team is composed of most of last years team with severaJ useful players filling in the gaps left by S. Ellis R. Melton and A Hutton, this season looks very promising.

DRAKE HOUSE REPORT, 1961 - BOYS

    ATHLETICS — 1960

Yet again Drake was placed third in the Inter-House Athletics competition last year — 321/2points behind the winners — White.

Drake was unplaced in the 1st., 2nd., and 3rd., year field events and gained only three places in the corresponding track events, these being a 3rd. by Griffin in the first year 100 yards. Another 3rd., in the third year 100 yds., and a first in the third year 220 yds both the latter positions being taken by BOWERS. The poor result achieved by the juniors were partly due to lack of talent, but mainly due to lack of training.

Results in the Senior Section of the sports proved somewhat better for Drake. SIMMS of the fourth year proved to be a sound all-round athlete. He won his javelin event with a record throw of 112 feet 11 ins., and came second in the discus and 220 yds. My predecessor, Jack Swan, proved to be another athlete of note, both in the field and on the track. He came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the senior discus and javelin events, won the 440 yds. and was 3rd., in the 100 yds. Swan, together with McDermott, Tagliaferro and McKenzie was also a member of the victorious senior 4 x 110 yds. relay team. Tagliaferro also achieved 2nd and 3rd positions in the senior 880 yds and 220 yds events. Bond won the senior shot put event convincingly, and was second in the javelin.

I hope that this year, Drake will pull herself up from the third position we seem to have occupied for years. After school training sessions have been on the whole, fairly well attended by the juniors, and consequently I think that they will improve on their results of last year. As usual with seniors, more particularly the fourth year, it is like trying to get blood out of stone to get them to train after school. I sincerely hope that they change their attitude before it is too late.

    FOOTBALL — 1960 — 61

This season Drake's aggregate position in the inter-house soccer league was second. Two places better than last season when we were last!

Despite his arrival at half-time for one match, the seniors were, on the whole, well captained by Northover who was assisted by Melton as vice-captain.

In the senior section of the league, Drake finished 2nd to White who won this section comfortably. The team had a very strong defence but our attack lacked shooting power. Our regular full-back, Roberts, was generally sound, but a little more speed would have made him a more versatile player. The half-back line was the best feature of our team, Bond in the centre was flanked by McDermott and Melton, this proved a very successful combination for both attack and defence.

The forward line from left to right was:— Northover, Fitzgerald, Jarvis, Honey and Haylock. Probably the most promising forward was Fitzgerald who lacked only in the ability to shoot hard. Haylock on the right wing played very well throughout the season.

Very little can be said in praise of the 2nd and 3rd year team which finished bottom of its section. This was, I feel, solely due to lack of teamwork and not lack of talent. They never seemed to settle down and get the ball out to the wings but tried to force it through the middle too much. Standen was the 2nd and 3rd year Football Captain.

Our first year team started the season very well by winning their first two matches. Their victims in the second of these matches was White, the eventual champions, who they beat 5-1. The next two matches were drawn and they lost the last two.

The first year were fortunate in having a good captain in Briard, who played good, intelligent football throughout the season. Another outstanding 1st year footballer was Madden who showed a surprising amount of skill on the right wing but didn't have much support from the remaining forwards.

The first years were second in their section of the league.

    CROSS COUNTRY — 1961

Drake's aggregate position this year was third, down by one place from last year.

The best team performance this year was that of the Intermediate U-15)
Team which came second, with all six runners to count finishing in the first 19.
Individual placings Witts 1st, Standen 3rd., with Bentley,

Fitzgerald, Austin and Findlay 0th, 13th, 18th and 19th respectively. A good effort.

The Junior Team finished in third position this year. Some good individual positions were achieved by Drake boys, notably Knight, Tissington and Bowden who finished 3rd, 6th, and 9th. The Juniors aggregate position could, I feel, have been improved if the after school practice sessions had been better attended.

For the second year in succession, Drakes Senior Team occupied the unenviable last position. The reason for this is exactly the same as it was last year — LACK OF TRAINING. Certain senior members of the House consider it training to amble around the course at a slow walk once a week. This will not do next year, and if the Seniors are to haul themselves from bottom to top next year they must train and train HARD.

    BASKET BALL -- 1961

I can now terminate my housenotes for this year on a somewhat happier theme.

Drake completely crushed all opposition in the Inter-House Basketball competition which was included for the first time for House Competition this year.

Our final average of points for and against per match was 22 for and 111/2  against. In one match we conceded only one point (and that from a free shot!) and scored 88. This must be attributed to a very able defence and an outstanding attack. The team was chosen from the following boys:— D. Vadney (Captain), M. Bond, D. Northover, J. McDermott, N. Reubens, M. Tagliaferro, H. Gisbourne, J. Carroll and myself.

I hope that it will become traditional for Drake to win this event.

Our thanks are due to Mr. Griffiths for organising the competition and refereeing the game.

    ALAN C. SELMAN

    (Huose Captain).

    ATHLETICS

The school athletic sports were held at Ta Kali on Wednesday 17th May. The programme was made up of the finals of 42 track events and during the preceeding fortnight 39 field events were decided.

    BOYS' ATHLETICS

Ten new records were set up. The outstanding performer was McDonald, a 2nd year boy who broke three records, 100 yards, 220 yards and High Jump. Willman threw the javelin 146 feet 6 ins. Randall performed well, winning three events.

    GIRLS' ATHLETICS

Four new records were set up, and two equalled. The outstanding performer in field events was Barbara Pike in the 3rd year, who added ten feet to the discus record. Wendy Morrell put up the best track performance breaking the 180 yards record. Vivien Shepheard, in the 4th year, gave the best all round performance gaining four firsts and a second.

    DRAKE HOUSE — GIRLS

    GENERAL REPORT

On the whole Drake House has had quite a successful year. For the first time in many years we won the hockey shield, and were placed second in the Netball tournament.

At the end of the winter term we lost our house captain, Barbara Fisher, but she has been ably replaced by Marjorie Savage. Three valuable newcomers to Drake House are Marjorie Savage, Jacqueline Hughes and Morag Williamson.

    HOCKEY — SENIORS

Drake put up a very good fight for the hockey shield but at times it looked as if they would lose it to Stevenson House. In fact the seniors lost their first game to Stephenson 6-0, but they made up for it in later games.

Jacqueline Hughes played very well on the right wing, and Christine Ward was always a steadfast defence.

    JUNIORS

Most of Drake's success was due to the junior team. They played very well in every match and really deserve to be called a TEAM. Almost all the goals were scored by Margaret Shepheard who is definitely Drake's most promising player. There was little to choose between the rest of the players, they were all enthusiastic but I think the goal-keeper, Jane Wilkinson, deserves recognition, along with our two American girls, Janet Peters and Elizabeth Smith.

    THE SCORES WERE:-

    Drake 9 Points  9 Goals

    Stephenson 8 points  12 Goals

    White 5 Points  7 Goals

    Nelson 4 Points  3 Goals

    THE TWO TEAMS WERE:—

    NETBALL

Drake House came second in the netball tournament, the juniors in particular playing consistantly and being very co-operative. The senior team won one match and lost two. The junior team won one, lost one, and drew one. There was keen support at all tie matches, and all the players did their best.

Passing was a little erratic at times, and positioning on the court could have been improved, but the result was a great improvement on last year when Drake were placed fourth. With more practice before their matches, Drake could do still better next year.

    THE TWO TEAMS WERE:—

                                         Seniors                                                                     Juniors

    NELSON HOUSE NOTES — BOYS

    (A) FOOTBALL:

After winning the football shield last year, Nelson went to the other extreme this year and came last.

The first year captained by R. Ball played six games, won 2 drew one and lost three.

The second and third year team captained by Baxter won 2 drew and lost 2, and the outstanding players were, Baxter, Lee, Shepherd and Foster.

The fourth, fifth and sixth year team managed to scrape 3 points out of 12 but this was no fault of the captain John Merriman who was virtually forced to play by himself.

    (B) CROSS COUNTRY:

The position of Nelson in this event was last.

The Seniors came first in this group with Merriman 1st, Willman 4th and Malcahy 5th. The second and third year team captained by Bennett only managed a third, for although Mason was 4th, Bennett 7th and Tedde 12th the rest of the team was still running for days after.

The first year team came last in their group and have now probably realized that in a cross country no-one can stop to admire the country side.

    (C) SWIMMING:

Nelson after holding the swimming trophy for the fast five years came second this year.

The boys of the house had very little success and if the girls had not given :i good account of themselves the final position would have been worse.

    (D) ATHLETICS:

Nelson came second in the overall position this year. After being in the lead up to the last three events they were unlucky to be beaten by White who with 436 came first with a margin of 10 points.

The most successful of the boys in track and field events were McKee, Merriman, Straw, Pascoc, Mulcahy and Hughes.

    (continued on page 82)

    (E) CRICKET:

Nelson won the cricket cup this year. The credit was mainly due to the fourth, fifth and sixth form team which did not concede a single point under the captaincy of B. Wells.

The third year team captained by G. Ellis also had a good season, with P. Stubbs and A, McKee coming to the fore as promising batsmen. Stubbs has in fact been selected for the School First XI this season.

The second year team had no success but this was balanced by the first year team, which captained by A. Baxter and supported by Shepheard and Pascoe conceded only two points.

I would like to take this opportunity in thinking Mr. C. Pollard, .who is leaving, for the time and effort which he has devoted to the House. Without him I feel that Nelson would never have reached its present position nor its high standard of house loyalty.

This is also my last term at Tal Handak and I am very sorry to be leaving. In the three years that I have been in Nelson, teams have always represented the house in FULL strength. The athletics found Nelson senior team down to four competitors for all track and field events — about 10 events — and I am grateful to Kidd, Spenceley and others who stepped into the breach, and preserved the tradition.

I hope, that my successor will have the same co-operation that I have had. and that Nelson will have a House Master equal to Mr. Pollard next year.

    W. T. WILLMAN

    (House Captain).

    ATHLETICS — 1960

Nelson made a splendid effort this year and were rewarded with the Girls' House Cup. Everyone was extremely co-operative and there were no lack of volunteers for the heats.

We must pay particular attention to thanking the juniors for their marked enthusiasm and reliability. It is unfortunate that we cannot name each individual winner, because happily there were too many of them. However, we must congratulate Vivian Shepheard and Hilary Coombe for their notable performances in both the 100 and 220 yards, together with Sheila Hodgson who who won the 80 yards and Pamela Wilson — the obstacle race. The relay teams were also strong, particularly the first, second, fifth and sixth year teams, all of whom were placed first.

The seniors were not outstanding in the Field Events but managed second and third places in some, notably the discus. The juniors on the other hand, shone in both Field and Track events. In the Field events, Hesse who won the high jump, and Vivian Shepheard who obtained first place in the long jump.

On the whole, the performance was excellent and we only hope that the same will happen this year.

    SWIMMING — 1960

The swimming Gala was held towards the end of the Summer Term. Nelson, unfortunately, started off third, primarily because there were not enough seniors entered for the heats; but many had examinations. However, our final position was a well-deserved second. Once again, I should particularly like to bring the spirit of the juniors to the notice of the House! They tried very hard indeed, notably Vivian Shepheard and Tessa Ellum.

We must again thank Jane-Mary Masters for winning both the backstroke and senior diving medals for us.

Although we could only make second place in these sports we must congratulate the keen spirit shown throughout and hope that this year with more practice, and many more volunteers for the heats, we can raise our position to first.

    NELSON HOUSE — GIRLS

    HOCKEY (Seniors)

Nelson seniors have once again failed in their attempts to win the Hockey Shield. They lost two matches, but managed to draw with White. The team played with enthusiasm throughout the season. Great credit must be given to Wendy Roden and Kathleen Hines, who played well in all matches.

    The Team consisted of: —

    Goalkeeper  Sheila Selman

    Right Back  Rosemary Mulcahy

     Left Back  Janet Merriman

     Right Half     Judith Roach

    Centre Forward   Wendy Roden

    Right Inner   Patricia Roden

    Left Inner  Carol Knight (Captain)

    Right Wing  Helen Smith

    Left Wing Susan Hesse

      Reserve: Pat Sawyer.

    HOCKEY (Juniors)

Nelson's junior team were more fortunate than the seniors. They managed to draw two matches with White and Stevenson. The defence was weak but the forwards combined well, although more shooting nractice is needed. Anne Williams and Susan Plumpton deserve special mention for their keenness and good play throughout the season.

    The Team was: —

    Goalkeeper  Anne Lamacroft

     Right Back  Pamela Selman

    Left Back   Carole Kirkby

    Right Half  Susan Backhouse

    Left Back  Beverley Enders

     Centre Half   Christine Sykes

     Right Inner   Susan Plumpton

    Left Inner   Linda Finney

    Right Wing    Pauline Potter

    Left Wing   Carole Hatcher

    Reserves: Anne Lloyd. Veronica Hickford.

                              NETBALL

The Senior Team played quite well this season, although their final position war fourth?

The juniors were slightly more successful due to the good play on the part of the shooters and defence.

    The Teams were: — JUNIORS

Centre    Jennifer Phelps  Centre Attack  Beverly Enders Centre Defence  Pamela Selman  Goalkeeper Anne Lamacroft  Defence  Pat Hatton

Shooter  Susan Plumpton (Captain)  Attack  Pauine Potter

    Reserve: A. Robinson

The Juniors tried very hard in all the matches that they played. They were undoubtedly very keen even filling in positions in the Senior Team during practices. After a season of hockey many of these young people show ability to play the game well but PRACTICE is needed, especially in Goal Keeping. The forwards played well and in defence Claire Hollister plays well.

    The Senior Team consisted of: — G.K. J, Duke   R.B. C. Mathews   L.B. M. Cleaver   R.H. V. Bennett   C.H. W. Morrell (Captain)   L.H. P. Bale

                                                 R.W. S. Stevens  R.I. L, Kennedy  C.F. S. Frow    L.I. E, Pritchard  L.W. J. Tonna    Reserve: D. Rowe, J. Dean

The Seniors were worthy of praise throughout the season. As a team they played splendidly and never lost a match. The passing in the forward line was extremely good with good backup by the defence. It is disappointing, however, rhat many of these players will have returned to England by next season.

    NETBALL

    JUNIORS

    The Team consisted of: —

G.K. Wendy Robinson  D. Caroline Arnot   D.C. Elizabeth Smith  C. Joanna Vaughan-Cox  A.C. Heather Birell   S.H, Lorna Tierney (Captain)

Reserves: Glenys Sheppard, Susan Armstrong, D. Cruikshank.

The juniors tried hard in all their matches and always showed great enthusiasm especially during practices. They were always tempted, during the game, to move into the centre of the court and middle the play. I feel that had there been more practices beforehand, a better standard of netball would have achieved. The defence was very good, mentioning in particular W. Robin-sin and in shooting H. Birell did well.

    SENIORS

    The Team consisted of: —

    G.K. P. Hannan  D. W. Morrell (Captain)  D.C. C. Pazowka  C. E. Pritehard  A.C. P, Bale  A. J. Tonna  S.H. S. Frow

Reserves: Lyn Kennedy, Carol Mathews, Ann Skinner, Susan Salter, Maureen Cleaver.

The senior team was most unfortunate throughout the Inter - - House Netball Competition when they were faced with an incomplete team due to injuries and absenteees. However, those who did represent their house did their best and enjoyed the game. I must point out that there is a need for careful passing and handling on the ball as well as tactical positioning.

We tied for second place with Drake again but due to their higher goal average we were positioned third.

    ATHLETICS

We did not win the girls' trophy but we did very well in winning combined cup for Girls and Boys.

Sally Frow did exceptionally well in all the events for which she entered.

    STEPHENSON HOUSE NOTES — BOYS

    FOOTBALL: 1960-61

This was a fair season for Stephenson, being placed third in the final table, level on points with Drake, the latter however clinched second due to their superior goal average.

The 1st year were the most successful of Stephenson's teams coming second to White, Much of this success was due to Mr. Smith who took great interest in their activities. The outstanding players were Nicholls, Parmenter and Kelson, the first named has however since left.

The juniors were well led by Nicholls and obtained third place in their section. The team tried very hard, after losing their first three games, with Day and Small prominent.

The seniors started the season disastrously, letting in fifteen goals in their first two games. From that point onwards they fought well, and their noticeable lack in skill, was made up to some extent by great enthusiasm. They went on to win two of their games. The best players were Macdonald, Booth and Birkett, the latter two having left before the close of the season.

    CROSS-COUNTRY: 1961

This year Stephenson faired rather better than on previous occasions by obtaining a creditable second place to White, the champions.

The major achievement was by the first year, who managed to give the house a good start with a lead of thirty six points. Credit for this must be given to Nicholls, Partmenter and Mills, all three figuring in the first five.

The under fifteens however did not do so well, being well and truly beaten to finish last. Day and Smith, in coming in 9th and llth respectively were the better runners.

The seniors ran well, as a team, in coming third behind Nelson and White, Peters and Wilkin A. being worthy of mention.

Having notes for neither cricket, athletics, or swimming my observations must be judged only from results.

    ATHLETICS: 1961,

Stephenson won the athletics by a margin of over ninety points, which was indeed an excellent performance, and gave the house the distinction of winning this event for the past three years. However the boys "only" obtained second place in their section, four points behind White.

The most successful competitors were: —1st Year:  Macdonald and Smth

    2nd Year :Day.

    3rd Year: Birkitt.

    4th Year:  Yeo.

5th and 6th Years:  Lawrence and Graham.

Graham and Lawrence represented the School Athletics Team, the latter being captain.

    SWIMMING: 1961.

The famous "Water Babies" of Stephenson were once again badly placed, being as usual at the bottom of the table. However there were a few individuals who swam well, particularly Townsend and Uran.

As their standard of swimming was not particularly high, there is plenty of room for improvement this year, and let us hope the "Water Babies" will live up to their name and pull their weight in this event.

    CRICKET: 1960.

This season Stephenson took third place in the final table behind Nelson and White.

The first year played well winning two of their three games but poor fielding and inaccurate bowling resulted in them being relatively unsuccessful in winning only one game. The senior team having a fair team at the onset, but being weakened by school first eleven calls, succeded in only one game, then only tieing an exciting final match with White.

    WHITE HOUSE

    GIRLS

White House certainly began with what we hoped was a glimpse of the year ahead, by winning the Shield of Merit. In some ways we have fulfilled this promise, as will be seen in the following report, although at certain times the results were not as good as might have been hoped.

    HOCKEY

This year we were unlucky on the Hockey field. In the senior team our captain was unable to play because of a back injury and her absence seems to have had a detrimental effect on the rest of the team. Our juniors, through not brilliant, definitely showed promise on quite a few occasions.

On the whole a great many of our faults could be accounted for by our Jack of practice yet regardless of this there was certainly no lack of enthusiasm in both teams.

    FINAL RESULTS

    Drake  9 Points  -   9 Goals

     Stevenson   7 Points   - 10 Goals

    NETBALL

For the second year in succession White House girls gave a display of team work and enthusiasm worthy of the shield which is again added to our trophies.

The senior team inspired by their captain, Linda Knapp, played extremely well in all the inter-house matches, with decisive wins on each occasion.

Our remarkable success may be attributed in no small way to our having four players from the school 1st. VII.

Although lacking the polish of the senior team our juniors showed a great deal of enthusiasm and house-spirit, losing only one match our of three.

    SPORTS

White House girls showed great promise at the beginning of the 1960 by scoring the highest number of points in the field events. Unfortunately, perhaps due to a hurried resuffle on the actual day, we were unable to keep up with the pace set by Stephenson and at the finish our total aggregate ranked only second.

    WHITE HOUSE BOYS

For the second year in succession White House Boys have taken first place in Athletics. Prominent in the 1st year was Patterson who won the 100 yds. 220 yards and long jump. A new record for throwing, the cricket ball was set up by Tucker who won his event.

Our 2nd year year team was the 4 x 110 yds. relay, and Stenton who had previously won the long jump, broke the tape with a very comfortable lead. Parker in the 3rd year won the 100 yards and the long jump, was well placed in the high jump and was the key man in the winning relay teams

The section of the house which scored most of our points was undoubtedly the fourth year. Randall came first in the shot and discus while Turner won the javelin setting up a new record. On the track, Randall and Bramley were first in the 220 and 440 yds. respectively. They also played useful parts, in the 4 x 110 relay, which the White House team won.

In the fifth and sixth forms there was a distinct lack of long jumpers and throwers. But our long jumpers Fraser and Hannant were placed 1st and 3rd respectively. In the track events, Shepheard won the mile and Hoctor the 880. Apart from winning the boys trophy, White house were the overall winners although we were hard pushed by Nelson.

    CROSS - COUNTRY (1961)

Once again White won the inter-house cross-country. After being persuaded that White had a reputation for winning the cross-country, our three teams got down to some serious training. Our best performers in the 1st year were: Patterson (1); Harris (11); Golding (12); Carter (14); Thornton (16); Tucker (25). The team was placed 2nd to Stephenson.

The most successful team was the under 15's with B. Turner (2); Connacher (5); Cummings (6); I. Turner 10); Parker (14); Ballard (17). It was placed first, while the senior team with Shepheard (2); Hoctor (3); Bowes (6); Frazer (10); Breslin (18); Hannant (29); was second in its event.

We must congratuate these successful runners but add that we will expect the same determination next season !

    SWIMMING (1960)

The most outstanding performer at the swimming sports held last summer at Ricasoli was Graham of White house who won the Breast stroke, freestyle, Backstroke and diving in the over 15J group. In the under 151/2 group Moorman won the freestyle and backstroke and was placed second in the breaststroke. Beeston, Woolner and Piper did well in the under 14's and White won all the relays and the final result was that White was first. However I must point out that as the houses do not train as teams for the sport, this being due to lack of facilities, the results depend upon the distinction of good swimmers among the houses.

    Bernard L. Hoctor (House Captain).
